Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

I am a Harry Potter fan, and that should be stated from the very start. I love the books and really enjoy the movies, so that is my bias.

I remembered about halfway through Goblet of Fire that other than the ending chapters, this was my least favorite of the books. It’s a great book, but compared to the others, it’s the weakest. I think the same could be said of the movie.

I enjoyed the movie because it was fun, entertaining, and suspenseful enough, but I didn’t like it as an adaptation. I didn’t feel that it really entered the world of Harry Potter and Hogwarts and wizards — and that is exactly what makes the books and movies so great. Usually, you get to embrace the entire existence of these people, but not so in The Goblet of Fire.

Still, I’d definitely recommend seeing the movie, as it’s a great story. Everybody is doing a good job in their roles, even though we hardly got to see half of them in this film. I think Daniel Radcliffe is still doing well as Harry, Emma Watson may be slightly annoying, but she’s still cute, and Rupert Grint is turning out to be my favorite of the three. The kid who plays Neville Longbottom is turning out to be a lot less dorky than they thought he would be, and I bet they’re having to dorkify him before each day’s shoot.

Ralph Fiennes is definitely the best part of the movie. His Voldemort is way better than Gary Oldman’s Sirius Black, that’s for sure. He’s super scary, and if I were Daniel Radcliffe, I’d be terrified of him, even if he was joking around like in this picture here. That big smile Daniel’s got on his face? He’s really thinking, “He’s going to kill me… somebody help me!” I know that’s what he’s really thinking. I know it.

Because Ralph Fiennes does not mess around.

Anyway… to sum up:

  • Good movie.
  • Good cast.
  • Kind of long.
  • Took out too much of the story. (Even to a minimalist like me.)
  • Book/Movie 5 will be better, I’m sure of it.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith

I saw this one as well, only I didn’t stay up til 3am to see it like I did with the others. I had my doubts going into this one - and I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve openly bashed the prequels. After thinking this through, I’ve come to some revelations about them.

  • Light saber battles are way cooler in prequels than trilogy
  • CGI adds a lot to the films that couldn’t be done before
  • Wookies rule
  • There’s bad acting and dialogue in all 6 films
  • Even though this films are the coolest things ever, they have created, allowed the creation for and have helped to inspire most of what we know today as sci-fi and special effects
  • The only real difference between the first and last 3 movies are the actors playing the parts

These aren’t very many points, and it’s kind of minimalistic, but hopefully you get my point. Maybe the original 3 just seemed so much cooler since we were so much younger and we’ve become so desensitized to so much stuff. Once you get the “wow” of that first movie you can never quite re-create that wow factor. Thoughts? Ideas?

Be Cool

Hey I saw a movie!!! Ok, so I guess it’s not that exciting.

This is definitely a film with a start studded cast. You got John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Vince Vaughn, Cedric, André 3k, Steven Tyler, Danny DeVito and Seth Green among others. From the previews I was expecting this to be a funny movie, but it was nothing quite like what I saw. This was definitely a comedy. I really loved Travolta’s character in this. He was so suave, cool and sophisticated. He always had it together, always knew what was up, always one step ahead of the guys, and always had an answer for everything. Sorta reminded me a bit of Swordfish but he was cooler. It was also really cool to see Steven Tyler and Aerosmith(cause I’m a fan). There was also a dance scene between Uma and Travolta that for some reason reminded me a lot of Pulp Fiction. Unfortunately James Woods is kinda out of the picture right away, but this just leads the story from one turn to the next as wannabe thugs, mafia guys, police, Vince Vaughn pretending to be black and a few other ingredients get mixed together to form a refreshingly funny and interesting film.

Before Sunset

It’s probably too late to catch this one in theaters, but that’s okay. If you missed the first one (”Before Sunrise”) about 9 years ago, do yourself a big happy favor and rent it sometime. Then see this one and tell me that the screenplay doesn’t deserve some kind of award for being so close to reality and everyday conversation…it’s a bit scary!
